A fire drawn around

A fire drawn around
Her like a shawl
A mind for a whip
A heart for a stone
To hurl

A voice for the howling wind
Stubbornness for a stump
A look for a cool stream flowing
A temper for a rock-slide
Closing eyes for the falling sun

Flesh for a patch of soil
The blood for a hot spring
The blood for a roar
The blood for the glue
The blood for a hammer pounding

Skin for heat in the night

Running for the sky
Jumping for all lost things
A laugh for nothing at all
A smile for a lonely tree swaying

The Past...in Photos! Part 1

Hey Friends.

Here are a bunch of photos from the last two weeks of our travels east of the Mississippi. Starting with the aftermath of the van getting broken into in Montreal (my computer was stolen.....ARRRRRGH thievery!). The swarthy Brazilian looking fellows...Are in fact swarthy Brazilian fellows. They are a band called Momo who we were lucky enough to play with twice. Really good band, really great dudes. Check them out HERE. Then a bunch of photos from our time recording with Eric Neave and the rest of the Cedarwell family in Sheboygan. Their record is really going to be great and we were so happy to share a little bit in the project. If you don't know Cedarwell, educate yourself HERE.

Mountains!

We just played in Salt Lake City two nights ago at a great place called Kilby Court. Fine long standing all ages venue. Fine people.

We played with two bands from the area, one being David Williams, check him out HERE, and the other being Bronco, check them out HERE. (I'm rather confounded by the structure of the previous sentence. Please forgive my almost certain misuse of comas.) We stayed with a friend from a band out of Salt Lake called Band Of Annuals. Check them out HERE. He has a dog named Lady who is a puppy. She is enormously cute and ungainly. I was struck again, as I am with some frequency when around friends with pets, that if you look objectively at the situation for a moment, isn't it strange that we have little furry creatures running around our houses? On top of which, these little creatures yearn for another species' affections...It's just a thought that strikes me now an again.

We're heading to Boise today. Also, I'm reading the seventh book of the Harry Potter series and it's gotten really heavy. Was Dumbaldore as good as Harry always thought? I mean he really wasn't very forth coming with his past now that I think about it.....

love.

Ouch.

Jon's shiny shoes and our new friend Danny joining us on violin in Omaha.

Ouch. Forgive me it's been quite a while since our last post. Some things happened:

- We played a ton of fun shows including one crazy show at the massive Riverside Theater in Milwaukee opening for Bon Iver - an incredible honor.
- We had a fun show at Pop Montreal (love Canada!) but then had our window smashed in the middle of the day and Jon's computer stolen. Luckily, we have insurance.
- That made me sad.
- We did some recording with our friend Erik Neave of the band Cedarwell but I got the flu to the swine and sweated it out in bed with extreme exhaustion for the next week.
- We spent some time relaxing at home after our too long nine weeks on the road without a break and now we've learned our lesson.
- We're back on the road making toward the West with renewed vigor.

Love.

Rock flavors.

I'm making certain observations about venues where we make music. It's an art really, to run a venue. I think maybe the state of the venue says something about the attitude of those who run it toward the music that happens there and the patrons of the arts. Every place has it's own appeal and aesthetic to be sure.

You have the do-it-yourself sort of underground venues that look like they haven't been cleaned probably ever, which is totally rock because cleaning is not my favorite thing. What I love about these places is that they operate on a shoestring budget so that the music can go on and on for the kids who love it. Without this type of venue, music would be old, stale, and elite.

You have the weathered pro venues where everything is painted black partly for the dark underbelly contingent who lurk in the belly of the place and partly to be a blank slate for the music like a black box theater or something. These can be some of the most pro places in my experience and they might be clean too. I've even see toilet paper there and doors that lock to the bathroom.

There are so many kinds of places that you can't list them all but finally, for the sake of this note, you have the kind of places that have a comfy, well lit green room with golden bloom chamomile tea, strawberries, lemon slices, and homey mugs. What I love about these places is that being comfy is totally rock. Without this type of venue, musicians would be weary, ragged, and of less sunny disposition.

Thank you rock venues.

Love at first listen music.....

(above Jesse, Jason, and I in front of a really big plant outside the Cook residence in Durham, NC)

We are traveling toward Knoxville from Asheville, NC (which by the way is a most beautiful mountain city....most beautiful) and then we're heading north to Indianapolis on this our travel day. It's been a really nice time down south for the past week or so.

Things I would like to do now after spending some time down here: 1. Revisit Grimey's Record store in Nashville, TN and buy more music 2. Return to Lexington, KY to see horse races 3. Learn more about Praying Mantises (I saw one in the flesh or whatever their body is composed of, note: learn what praying mantis is made out of if not flesh, on a shrub just a few feet away from me. It was wild.....both literally and figuratively).

The Reason for the Blog entry:

I want to let you know about two amazing bands that we have had the opportunity to meet and play with whilst on the road. It would benefit you enormously to listen to them.

1. THESE UNITED STATES

We've been able to play three shows with these dudes and they are excellent. Become their electronic friend here.

2. HELADO NEGRO

We played with them last night in Asheville and it was beautiful. Become their electronic friend here.

Buy their records and go see their concerts. These people make me want to play and write music better and that is a really good feeling.

I love you.
